On Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 9:55 am, the Clayton Fire Department was called to 1103 Sunset Lane (Clayton Estates Mobile Home Park) in response to a structure fire. The fire was in a mobile home and was extinguished by the Fire Department, but appeared to be of suspicious origin. The mobile home was the residence of Javier Perez (age 27). Perez reported that he was at home at the time of the fire, but he escaped without injury. The structure received damage estimated at $10,000.
The Clayton Police Department was asked to assist in the investigation of the cause and origin of the fire. The investigation showed that the fire was started inside the structure and appears to have been set intentionally.
UPDATE | Friday, August 07, 2009
Detectives have determined that the alleged victim (reporting person) in this case initially provided investigators with false and misleading statements. Additional investigation tends to indicate that a known individual set the fire following a dispute over money that was allegedly owed to that person by the occupant of the mobile home. The victim (reporting person) subsequently left the state. When located and contacted by detectives, he indicated that he would not return to North Carolina and did not want to press charges in this case.
The known individual that is believed to be responsible for the conflagration is now in jail on an unrelated matter. After consultation with the Office of the District Attorney, it was determined that this case did not merit further action or prosecution.
