On May 15th, 2009, the Town of Selma reported to the Clayton Police Department that they were a victim of a check cashing scam. Officials with the Town of Selma reported that they sent a former customer a check for a utility refund. Days later the customer reported they didn’t receive the check and the Town of Selma issued a stop payment on it. In turn the customer went to the Town of Selma and personally picked up a newly issued check in its place. The customer then immediately cashed the newly issued check. A few days later that same customer cashed the first original check at a local restaurant in Clayton. The check was in the amount of $999.00.
