Counterfeit Ten Dollar Bills | October 20,2007
Although not yet seen in Clayton, the Selma Police Department is reporting that over the past week their have been at least seven (7) counterfeit ten dollar bills passed at  restaurants and convenience stores in Selma.

All the counterfeit bills have the same serial number:

CG82744180A
 bogus-10.jpg

Experience has proven that this type of crime often spreads quickly to other areas, so local merchants should carefully inspect $10 bills.  Those passing the fake money are likely depending upon the fact that smaller denominations are usually less carefully scrutinized, and therefore likely to be accepted more readily.

All citizens and businesses should be on the lookout for the counterfeit currency.  In Selma, it is believed that at least one of the fake $10 bills was passed by an unwitting individual that had innocently come into possession of the bill.  Anyone who has any information on the counterfeiting or receives one of the fake bills with serial # CG82744180A is asked to immediately to report the incident to local law enforcement.

Telephone Threats and Extortion | September 25, 2007
Last week, a bank inside the Wal-Mart in Lumberton, NC received a threatening phone call advising that there were bombs inside the building and snipers located outside in the parking lot.  The caller requested that the bank employee go to a Western Union to wire an undisclosed amount of money.  The bank did not comply.

On the same date, another call was received at the bank inside the Wal-Mart in Smithfield, NC. The caller again made threats of bombs and snipers. This call was disconnected before the request was made to wire money.  The FBI advises that similar incidents have been occurring all over the United States.

Should any banks or other businesses receive similar phone calls of this nature, they should try to obtain a phone number for the caller (Caller ID), and should not wire any money that is requested.  9-1-1 should be called immediately to report the threat to law enforcement.

Larcenies of Wallets from Shopping Carts | September 14, 2007
The Clayton Police Department is issuing a crime prevention alert about a recent wave of larcenies that are occurring from shopping carts in grocery stores. Eight such thefts have been reported in the town over the past 2 months.  The majority of the larcenies have occurred during daylight hours when people are shopping.  The victim is often distracted by someone else, while a suspect takes their credit card or wallet from a handbag or while unwatched in the shopping cart.  READ MORE HERE.

Victims have usually not been aware of the thefts until later at the check out counter, when the items are discovered missing.  These sneak thieves are looking for the easiest targets.  Following these tips will help you become more of a difficult target:

  • Check the latching device on your purse.  Make sure it’s zipped or closed at all times.
  • Never let your purse lie unattended on a store counter or in a grocery shopping cart.
  • Don’t leave your purse unattended at any time while shopping.
  • Don’t be distracted by others, be suspicious of people asking for you help.  Refer them to a store employee.
  • Shop with a friend or family member.
  • Make sure that if a theft occurs you notify your financial institutions immediately and put a possible fraud/ID theft alert on your checking and credit card accounts.
  • Notify a store employee, and call the Police immediately to file a report.

The Clayton Police Department is asking area grocery stores for their cooperation in posting this notice conspicuously in their stores to warn unsuspecting shoppers.
