The Patrol Services Division is under the direction of Division Commander - Captain John Coley. They are responsible for the prevention and suppression of crime. The division consists of sworn officers who answer calls for service which come into the Johnston County Emergency Center and conduct self initiated activity.
These officers are on four different patrol squads. Each squad consists of four officers, one sergeant and one lieutenant.
The Patrol Division also encompasses specialty units which include the bicycle patrol squad, tactical team and honor guard. They are used to address issues outside the more traditional role of law enforcement and to handle special needs.
The responsibilities of the Patrol Division include:
preservation of the public peace, protection of life and property, and
prevention of crime.
the preliminary investigation of all crimes.
continuing criminal investigations in other specified crimes.
enforcement of laws and investigation of incidents relating to vehicular
and pedestrian traffic, including motor vehicle collision investigation and
traffic enforcement activities.
the implementation and maintenance of Community Oriented Problem
Solving strategies, designed to improve the quality of life for the citizens
developing and implementing a target-hardening approach to crime
prevention, conducting public programs, residential and commercial
security surveys, serving as liaison with other crime prevention oriented
businesses (alarms, security and insurance) and follow-up inspections of
